According to [livejournal.com profile] news LJ has been placed on a spam list, making it so that reply notifications e-mails don't get sent. On my regular LJ it is one thing, on communities it is another. If I post, I want to see replies. There is the option of remembering where I posted and seeing if there are replies, but that is hard on a lot of comms, which get loads of replies.

Debating whether this is the straw that gets me onto Dreamwidth, how does Tumblr work?

Hum...I wonder if this is the source of all the spam junk I've been getting lately. Well, I suspect they'll get it fixed. You'll just have to tolerate it in the mean time. If they don't get it fixed...who can say. I don't know anything about the other sites you mentioned, so no comment. LOL

Hmm, for journal entries, I may crosspost to Dreamwidth, and then maybe not enable comments on LJ?

getting on spam lists is nothing unusual. The plan they have to get off the lists looks robust to me, so don't worry about it for now.

You can always enable IM notifications.

IM notifications are a consideration. But then I don't know if I want to give my AIM information to LJ...

LJ IM - if you're using Pidgin you can log in to your LJ account and receive notifications that way :)

Oh okay, don't use Pidgin, but I did just set it so that I'm notified of comments via the LJ inbox!

It's very useful indeed.

I don't know anything about Dreamwidth, so I couldn't say for sure. But maybe it's worth experimenting?

I've heard about this problem, but I have yet to miss a notification. Maybe Gmail is smart enough to know that they're not spam? I don't know, but if you've seen that your notifications aren't getting through, maybe setting up a Gmail account just for comment notifications would be the easier way to go?

I should probably switch to Gmail, but I'm so used to the e-mail provider I've always had :-(

I wasn't necessarily suggesting a switch, just a secondary account that could catch the LJ messages. Though I can't deny that Gmail continues to rock beyond all comprehension and has made me detest the craptastic Outlook client I'm forced to use at work, but that's a complete digression!

There are things I like about Gmail, and do have an account there. However I'm still used to running an old school e-mail client with its own software and instant messenger built in.

I tried to get into Outlook/Pop3 e-mail in college, but one day there was an e-mail that couldn't be downloaded by Outlook or Eudora, so I had the e-mail from that address forwarded to the infamous one I still keep!

Even back then infamous e-mail client was looked down up on and laughed at.

I used Thunderbird, and Eudora before that, before switching to Gmail. I figured it would be shortlived because I'd miss having a client. Instead, I've never looked back. Gmail does more than a client could and is so bloody intuitive. For the search function alone, it's worth it, but then the way it organizes messages...oh, fantastic!

Outlook just sucks so much, but my parents refuse to give it up. They email me and say, "We need new email addresses because we're ditching Comcast and we couldn't get Outlook to work with Gmail. What should we try?" and I want to write back and say, "You know, if you'd give up that damn Outlook BS, Gmail would be perfect, but you never listen to me so why do you keep asking??" So of course, they set up Hotmail. Whateeeeevvvveerrrrrr...

The only client I ever used was AOL :-(
Problem is that I am a creature of habit and have had an AOL address since getting the net back in 90s.

There are things I like about gmail and should get used to it, the storage, the way I can organize things, gmail chat.

Hotmail has always been the worst e-mail service to work with!

Well, you could keep the AOL address, have Gmail pull in your AOL mail, and still send as if it's from that address should you want to. It's an option, anyway.

And yeah, Hotmail is so 1996, and even then it wasn't any good. But I offered my suggestions and they made their choice and I shall stay out of it!!

LJ got on Hotmail's spam list many years ago. I don't know if they ever got that one resolved - I ended up switching my notificatons to Gmail and never looked back.

Although...it might not be a bad time to back up my journal. :D

Yay, just got a notification about this response :-D

Perhaps I should be backing up the journal though if things aren't going to go well on LJ. I should be backing up my journal, but is there a way to keep track of all my posts on communities over the years?

So that's why I don't get comment notifications anymore...

I guess I could try to have them sent to my Gmail instead of my Yahoo mail.
