Warning: This is a question which was inspired by the latest ep of Torchwood which has not aired in the US yet. However, I do feel the subject is an interesting topic debate, even for people who don't watch Torchwood. So if you haven't seen the latest episode, and don't want to be spoiled.
If someone in your life went missing, husband, child etc, would you rather have closure but learn about the person's horrid fate, or spend the rest of your life wondering what happened to them, and having hope that someday they might return? If a government agency knew what happened to the person, and the horrid fate, would you mind if they kept it from you because if they revealed it you would lose hope, and just be depressed about learning about their fate?
I'm just asking because this week's episode of Torchwood dealt with this matter in a way that offended me. Basically Gwen, who is a former cop who works for Torchwood found out that a bunch of people had gone missing around Torchwood. Her boss, Captain Jack kept her out of the loop and told her not to investigate, however knowing some of these people, particularly one woman with a missing thirteen year old son she refused to drop it. Eventually she discovered them, they had fallen through a rift in time, which caused them to age forty years. They were being taken care of in essentially a mental institution and had 4 good hours a day, and 20 bad, painful hours during which they do nothing but scream.
Gwen located woman's son, and reunited them, later on the woman said that she would rather not have found out the truth about what happened to her son. She would have preferred to keep up her hope and remain blissfully unaware of her child's horrible fate. Gwen then agreed not to spill the information about the rest of the victims, and then realized that Captain Jack was right in keeping her out of the loop.
In a lot of ways this episode just offended me, I would assume that if someone is missing a child, that they would want some closure, and to know what happened, no matter how horrible their fate might have been.
