Bah, as of March 13 LJ will no longer let people sign up for basic accounts. If you want a new, free account it will have to be ad supported.

I've enjoyed my basic account for years, and liked the fact that I could post on LJ without having to worry about spyware, but still have a nice free account. I've never been a fan of huge iconage and felt th need to go beyond basic. The end of the basic account just feels like the end of an era.

I totally agree! It doesn't even really affect those of us with existing accounts, but there's a greater barrier to joining now, so in the end it DOES affect us. What the idiots running the place don't seem to realize is that I (and others, I assume) am eager and willing to throw money at a service that makes me happy. A service that treats users like crap, deletes their accounts and forces ads down their throats does not fit the criteria. They won't be getting any more money from me again (unless I'm convinced things have completely changed). I'm personally all about the huge iconage, so if they weren't so dumb they'd have gotten a SECOND permanent account out of me.

I've always had mixed feelings about LJ, although I do like the idea of a social networking site attached to a blog. Perhaps in time I would have eventually paid for an LJ, however now I don't think I will.

Oh well, at least I started using my account this year instead of letting it hang there.
