Finally had a chance to see Stardust. Enjoyed the pacing, the plot, the special effects, and the fact DeNiro has ousted Depp from his position as favorite sexually ambiguous pirate. Also glad to see Michelle Pfeiffer back in action as the witch. This is her best role since Catwoman in Batman Returns.
However over on the IMDB folks were comparing it to Tenth Kingdom, and I've just been debating which is better. As much as I loved Tenth Kingdom, I will admit that it has some areas where the plot drags on, and that there has always been something a bit annoying about Virginia.
In Stardust, the characters were all likable, but not nearly as deep as those in Tenth Kingdom. This could be because Tenth Kingdom was seven hours, and this was only two, or because this was meant to be taken with a bit more of a grain of salt. It also lacked the violence of Tenth Kingdom. While Stardust has a few violent scenes, we don't get any innocent people being murdered, as we did in Tenth Kingdom. In retrospect it is more like Princess Bride.
Although that gets me thinking, was this film better than Princess Bride, which is another subject of debate. Both films were meant to be taken with a grain of salt, both were not as deep. This was a tad more violent, and a tad more serious, fewer in jokes about characters
