Maybe my expectations were too high after Runaway Bride, but so far this season's Who has failed to impress me. While I don't mind the character of Martha, and feel she has loads of potential, it is unfortunate that the episodes she has been so far have been on the mediocre side.
While it had its moments, the season's opener, Smith and Jones seemed like recycled Russel T. Davies. Standard plotline of aliens attacking earth, and the usual surprise of an evil alien posing as a human. The storyline was just too similar to Aliens of London, and World War Three to be enjoyable.
Also why haven't we seen any good new races of aliens or beings from other worlds? Besides the Timelords, so far on Nu Who, there are no well developed aliens, who aren't one note baddies.
In some ways Captain Jack, being from so far into the future satisfies this need, but after the way they changed him on Torchwood, I think it is time for a new recurring character.
I know new Nu Who has traditionally stayed away from aliens represent other cultures, type storylines, but I would not mind a recurring character who hails from another planet, and another culture. In fact, I think it is time they did some episodes taking place somewhere that is not Old Earth, Alternate Earth, Future Earth, or New New Earth or The Moon. Doing that would be a breath of fresh air, and would not necessarily turn the show into Stargate, Star Trek, or Babylon 5, where the primary focus was Earth's relations with it's newfound neighbors.
